Understanding Your Condition

What Causes TMJ & Jaw Pain?

TMJ & Jaw Pain is one of the most common conditions we treat at Activ Therapy. Understanding the underlying cause is the first step towards lasting relief. Our practitioners take the time to properly assess your condition before beginning any treatment — because the right diagnosis leads to the right treatment.

Our Approach

How We Treat TMJ & Jaw Pain

The jaw rarely acts alone — TMJ pain is usually a combination of joint mechanics, muscle overload, and the way your neck and posture load the joint. Our TMJ-trained physiotherapists assess jaw range and tracking, the chewing muscles, and your upper neck before starting treatment. Hands-on work typically combines joint mobilisation, intra-oral and external release of the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles, and dry needling where appropriate. That is paired with jaw control retraining, clenching and posture strategies, and a home program you can keep using. Where a dental splint or orthodontic input is needed, we will tell you and work alongside your dentist.

Recovery Expectations

Most jaw pain settles meaningfully within 4–6 sessions, and many patients notice easier opening and less morning tightness after the first two. Long-standing clenching or disc-related clicking takes longer — usually 8–12 weeks — because the habit and muscle load have to change alongside the joint.
